Window Treatments to Inspire

Heidi Milton

Window treatments always seem to be one of the final touches when I decorate a room.  They are a pivotal element that can pull a room together and make it feel complete.  Some windows might not need any treatments at all, like my kitchen bay window that overlooks a forested area.  But most rooms will benefit from the finishing touch of something other than blinds on the window.  In fact, I’m systematically adding window treatments to nearly every room in my home, and so that led me on a quest to find some fresh ideas for dressing up windows.

Ready-made curtains and drapes are always an easy option.  There are a wealth of ready-made drapes, valences, and shades both in stores and online.   In order to keep the cookie cutter aspects to a minimum,  look for unique patterns, styles, or textures.

Consider a DIY embellishment on ready made treatments to give them a custom look without the custom price tag.   Stenciling plain white drapes like these…

Or stencil a colorful design on simple pull down shades.

Pull down shades are also perfect for adhering maps or other patterned paper for a unique look.

Think of using fabrics other than draperies in conjunction with a drapery rod and rings with clips.  I love the use of these Hudson River blankets as drapes.

And how cute are these little clothes?  Perfect treatment for a laundry room, playroom, or nursery.

Other easy choices would be tablecloths, shower curtains, or even painters’ drop cloths.

But some of the most creative window treatments don’t involve fabric at all!  If you’re thinking outside the box, your home is filled with items that would make unique treatments for your windows…think photos, potted plants, mason jars, a simple shelf and more.

Ok, so I’d love to hear about your windows!  Are they bare and begging for treatment or or each window properly adorned?
