Whatever the weather where you are today, the calendar assures us that fall is just a couple weeks away. Fall ushers in the cooler temperatures and with it, this money-saving weekend project: winterizing your home. Knock out a few simple must-dos now before the thermostat drops and you’ll be well on your way to a winter-safe abode.
1. Change Your Furnace Filters
They should be refreshed once a month for maximum efficiency. Or better yet, grab a permanent filter that never needs changing.
2. Block Leaks
When it’s extra windy out and the falling leaves are swirling, carry a candle around the inside of your house to note where breezes are coming in, then close them with caulk, masonry sealer or door sweeps. You’ll not only seal in the warmth, you’ll also keep insects out.
3. Clean and tune up your furnace
Best to do this before the coldest days, just in case! Turn it on and let the old smell dissipate when you can still comfortably open the windows. Even better: have a pro come in and clean and tune it up once a year.
4. Reverse your ceiling fans
This is a quick fix that’ll make you more comfortable through the coolest months. Switch the way your ceiling fans blow so they push warm air downward and they’ll support your efforts to keep your home cozy.
5. Install a programmable thermostat
It’s not always easy to remember to turn down the heat when you leave the house, but a programmable thermostat will take care of that for you, knocking down your heating costs throughout the winter.
With a few quick steps, your house will be ready for whatever winter brings, and you can sit back and soak up the beauty of fall.
