It’s countdown to Passover in our home, which means pages upon pages of “To Do” lists, trips to multiple supermarkets all across town, and tons of cleaning. Everything before Passover has to be cleaned of Chametz, which is any food item that has been leavened (i.e. bread, crackers, cereal, pretzels, etc.) I found myself spending an hour in the kid’s bedroom searching for those hidden chocolates and candies that they burrow behind beds and stuffed into toy boxes. Jackets and sweatshirt pockets have to be emptied and shaken out, and couches dismantled and vacuumed to make sure there’s no Chametz left behind.
Tackling the kitchen is always the hardest, as everything needs to be scoured and scrubbed, cupboards closed and sealed, and dishes put away. I love taking out my special Passover plates and utensils, the knives so sharp from once a year use that I always manage to cut myself the first day. Each year, I also use Passover as the opportunity to replace cutting boards and drain boards, and I treat myself to a new kitchen mat.
I love Mohawk Home’s Dri-Pro line of anti-fatigue kitchen mats. They’re super cute and have a foam core that feels great under your feet – which helps when I spend 12 hours a day cooking for the holidays! The best part is that cleanup is really easy (just wipe down with a wet cloth), for those inevitable spills when cooking with the little ones.
The fun part of the holiday happens once all the cleaning is done! I love cooking for Passover, even though it can be a challenge to cook without the leavening products we cook with every year. I’m not a big fan of Matzah, but I’ve amassed a number of terrific recipes that my family and guests absolutely devour.
