You can live large in a small space. Tiny homes are a hot trend now, and many feel that it’s better to “do more with less” when it comes to home and home decor.
But living in a small space doesn’t mean you have to skimp on style or storage. Here are some examples of doing more with small spaces.
Small spaces usually require furniture to function in more than one way. For example, this kitchen island does triple duty: as a work area in the kitchen, as a dining table, and as storage (see bottom shelf). I love the industrial, clean look of the stainless steel, especially with the pops of color and warmth of the wood floors.
Another example is this bed:
What a great way to store extra supplies, linens, or other items not used frequently. That storage is much more accessible than just shoving things under the bed!
One way to make a small space look bigger is with light-colored paint. Take this white kitchen, for example:
The white-on-white palette reflects the natural light from the window, making the space seem bigger than it is. The white provides a neutral background for pops of color, too.
There’s plenty of storage to be found in a small space. Sometimes it just takes a little imagination…
This is one of my all-time favorite ways to create storage in a home with stairs. I love how the homeowners took otherwise unused space under the stairs and created useful, efficient storage.
Kitchens come with lots of gadgets and thus require lots of storage. In a small space, that can be a challenge.
If the kitchen doesn’t allow for more cabinets or drawers, take it up – up to the ceiling with shelves! This kitchen uses every inch of storage space available – from shelves to the ceiling (love the library ladder!), to hooks for pots on the wall, to under-shelf storage for cups and plates.
If a swinging door is in your way in a small space, change it to a sliding door instead.
Our pantry door blocked our silverware drawers when open, which made unloading the dishwasher difficult. I removed the doors that swung out and replaced them with this sliding door. It’s an easy and inexpensive fix!
