Marsala in Your Home: Pantone Color of the Year 2015

Heidi Milton

Happy New Year!  We couldn’t possibly discuss decor in early 2015 without exploring Pantone’s newest color of the year.  The color gurus at Pantone have decided that Marsala must hold center stage this year.

It would almost seem that what’s old is new again (remember the burgundies and wines of the nineties?).  But upon closer examination, I think Marsala is a fresh take on those old hues.   Pantone describes it as “a naturally robust and earthy wine red.”  Robust indeed, but Marsala can read as neutral with its brown undertones or as a pop of rich color in lighter spaces.   So let’s see how we can put Marsala into our homes this year.

Ground a room.  A beautiful rug is an easy way to introduce Marsala and similar shades of burgundy into your decor.

Most antique or vintage oriental rugs will have lovely shades of wine in their patterns. But you can also find gorgeous contemporary rugs to ground your room in Marsala.

Create cozy.  The rich tones of Marsala and similar colors can warm up any space.  Go bold and paint your walls (or an accent wall) in this color to evoke coziness in your decor.  It has a unique way of blending masculine and feminine vibes when used in large doses.

Introduce pattern.  Wallpaper has made a resurgence in recent years (old is new again, remember?), so why not add pattern with Marsala in wallcoverings?

Inject accent color.  Not sure you can commit to such a rich color?  Try adding accents of Marsala throughout your home.  Consider throw pillows, kitchen accessories, even art work.

You can even start REALLY small… with just a pouf. 🙂

In the process of researching this post, I concluded that I actually like this as a choice for color of the year.  Its ability to act as a neutral or accent color, with both male and female appeal make this a winner for me.  How about you?
