When preparing for this post, I started thinking about what exactly is an heirloom? Oxford Dictionaries defines “heirloom” as “a valuable object that has belonged to a family for generations.” That’s a tall order in today’s world! I think you could go on and debate the word “valuable” in that definition — what creates value after all? For me the value of objects in my home — my “heirlooms” — has to do with the memories associated with each piece.
So how would you create an “instant heirloom”? One idea would be to re-imagine what heirlooms you do have, such as family recipe cards or Grandma’s silverware, into an entirely new piece for your family to enjoy.
You could also create your own “heirlooms” that will be meaningful to future generations. A special quote stamped onto a pitcher or a handcrafted growth chart will accrue memories for years to come.
And finally, you can invest in quality pieces that will be front and center in your family’s day-to-day living… a good sofa, unique dining table, favorite rug or beloved piece of art are excellent examples. Anything in your home that will stand the test of time and is well-loved and well-used will become an heirloom in your family.

One last tip if you’re investing in a piece for the long haul: steer clear of ultra trendy designs and colors. Stick with the classics and that piece will be enjoyed for generations!
