I met with one of my favorite clients a few years ago to discuss her kitchen. She recently upgraded her appliances to stainless steel and had the cabinet fronts changed to bamboo. After marveling over the look of the new items, we turned to address the floor. She had secured a number of dark colored hardwood samples and had them littering her kitchen floor.
“Yes, I am sure. I am over the white floor, it is hard to keep clean, the kids are messy and, frankly, I am just tired of mopping, sweeping, scrubbing, rubbing. I want it out.” Sigh.“Are you sure?” I responded…blinking from disbelief.
After seeing her honey colored cabinets and reviewing countless dark wood samples, we finally settled on a dark vinyl with specs of brown, to complement the cabinets. Admittedly I was still nervous – but I loved that she was bold enough to go dark on her floor, especially in the kitchen. I also had her update the lighting – we replaced an old globe light (thank you 1970’s) with recessed lighting and added under cabinet lighting. I had this done to help balance out the dark floor, so the room wouldn’t feel like a cave.
To complete the room, we kept the boldness and chose a grey/beige combination on the walls; and the space seems very classy now. But the floor is still the star! Don’t you agree?
