I’m a “think outside the box” kind of person, so when it comes to the bathrooms in our house, especially the master bathroom, I have an overwhelming need to really expand my creative abilities. Most bathrooms have a small and limiting space for creativity, which, in my mind, proves to be a challenge… And I’m always up for a creative challenge.
I’m also a person that believes the bathroom should be a Zen-like sanctuary – it is the place most moms escape to, right? Who doesn’t love a good bubble bath or uninterrupted shower? To accomplish a more Zen-like feel, I’ve learned to think outside the box and decorate and furnish my bathrooms with more than just the typical bathroom must-haves.
To hang towels, we use hooks instead of rods. I love the look of the hooks and think it’s more visually pleasing to the eye. There’s nothing worse than a hanging towel that is not folded and hung properly – and with a house full of boys, a towel is never hung “properly”.
In the kids’ bathrooms, we use towel hooks and pegs to hang hand towels as well. This helps them to be responsible for their items and actions by providing an easy action with less room for error, which gives them a sense of accomplishment as well.
Bath mats must be soft, quick-dry and comfortable. On the rare occasion that I can stand in front of the bathroom mirror and apply my daily moisturizer and make-up, I prefer to pamper my feet. They deserve it, and so do I. Because my bathroom also doubles as a nightly bath space for the kids, I need something that can not only cushion my knees during bath time, but something that can withstand the splashes and high-traffic from the kids.
To store bath towels I have a stand with a large basket that rests on it. We have great bath towels that compliment the color scheme of our bathroom, so I like to show them off. I roll them up and place them inside the basket for show and to keep them accessible.
Some other things we keep in our bathroom include: Candles, portable speakers that hook up to an MP3 player, essential oil spray and bath salts. I also keep our counter space as open and free from clutter as much as possible in the event I can retreat for a much-needed bath, I don’t have to stare at clutter and messes.
Clutter free, light and beautiful is my Zen style. What’s yours?
