Inspiring Shades of Juicy Sorbet

Heidi Milton

Spring has been a long time coming this year and every spring I feel the urge to add some bright color into my home decor.  But here’s a decor confession:  I have commitment issues when it comes to bright color.   It’s as if we have a love-hate relationship.

Right now we’re in a “love” phase… I’m working on a guest room makeover starring this lovely lady and the bright shades of raspberry and lemon sorbet have got my creative juices flowing.

If you’re a commitment-phobe like me, the best way to bring shades of sorbet into your home is in small doses.  Here are some simple ideas.

Fresh flowers and fruit.  Does it get any simpler?

Bright shades fresh from the garden

I love this combination of bright pink and lime green but the possibilities are endless.

Add bright throw pillows to your neutral furniture.  Throw pillows are a great way to experiment with a color that may be out of your comfort zone without spending a lot of money.  I love the bright punch in these raspberry patterned pillows.

Pillows add a bright punch of color

Paint a small accent piece.  This sweet little chair was an experiment in Antibes chalk paint.  It’s the perfect punch of color in my family room and doubles as extra seating in a pinch.  It will probably even do a stint on my front porch this spring and may even pop into my guest room once the “redo” is complete.

Experiment with fresh colors

Let it Stand Out. Too much color and pattern can be visually overwhelming, but a bright touch against an otherwise neutral space becomes the star of the show.   The raspberry wall decor pieces here add whimsy and pop without detracting from the  serenity of the space.

Brights don’t have to disrupt — keep it simple

Preserve the neutral.  Keep as much neutral as possible in the mix so your eye can rest.  My guest room will feature mostly white and ivory decor with a few touches of sorbet, much like the photo below.

A perfect balance of neutrality

Keep focus on one colorful piece. Sometimes one piece of art on the wall or a bright rug is all it takes to inject a punch of color.  Imagine this painting in an otherwise neutral room!  It will have you longing for a bowl of sorbet.

Less is always more

Most importantly, have fun with it.  Decorating doesn’t have to be serious.  The bright shades of sorbet offer the perfect chance to have some fun sprucing up your home for spring!
