Just as the first breath of spring blows through the sticky, Southern air of Savannah, Georgia, the city’s economic heart starts pounding in preparation for what has been reported as the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the country. Picture throngs of grown adults, all clad in their shamrock best, dancing, laughing and merrily saying cheers to St. Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland… or at least to the plentiful supply of green beer and Savannah’s open container laws. Long story short, it was a blast and where I spent some of my favorite weekends each March during my collegiate days.
A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a dusty pair of flashing plastic shamrock earrings stowed away in a box from my old apartment. A playful gift from my mom before one of our last trips, they still remind me of all the memories my girlfriends and I created at those parades. Now that we’ve all been blessed by a full life, careers and the responsibilities that accompany adulthood, a trek to Savannah each March 17th is no longer in the cards. However, we can still relish in a little luck of the Irish at home instead by whipping up one (or three) of these tempting treats for a St. Patrick’s Day feast of our own!
So simple to whip up and too cute, we couldn’t resist this St. Patrick’s Day spin on a traditional puppy chow recipe, from Canadian mom blogger, Frugal Mom Eh!
For everyone dreaming of summertime’s fast approaching swimsuit season, we offer this skinny sweet from the blog Yummy Healthy Easy. It promises to be as easy to bake as it is on the waistline!
No baking necessary here, but still just as much a special treat! These Lime Sherbet Floats only require two ingredients and are both kid and dieter friendly.
Perfect to charm any leprechauns at the office, this recipe for tasty St. Patrick’s Day Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies is created with a hint of green food coloring and mint flavored baking chips.
A skinny swap for McDonalds’ sinful Shamrock Shake, this lighter version created by Katie of the Made to be a Momma blog is whipped up with low fat frozen yogurt and cool whip instead of calorie laden ice cream.
Tasty with crushed Oreos or even Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies on top, you can bet your pot of gold that these decadant brownies will disappear… fast!
Party tray perfect, add this St. Patty’s Day Whip to your menu with fresh fruit and graham crackers.
For the frosting addicts, these minty buttercream bites, featured on the blog Love from the Oven, fit the bill!
And for the adults, a far better substitute for green beer is this bubbly St. Patrick’s Day Punch made with champagne from Host the Toast!
One last, but definitely not least, dessert to doll up your St. Patrick’s Day celebration is this adult version of the Shamrock Shake. A boozy concoction sweetened with fresh ice cream and peppermint extract, this one from Dessert for Two looks too dreamy not to try!
