Are you confounded by color? Colors evoke emotions, so it’s natural to want to include them in our homes, but too much can be overwhelming. Here are some homes and gardens that use color, without going overboard.
Inside
Let’s start small. These spaces have furniture painted bright colors. For example, this daybed:
I made a daybed from some old doors and painted it in “New Life,” a bright green.
If that seems like too much color, maybe go for smaller, brighter pops. I added a little color to my dining room by painting an old kitchen cart.
All you need to add color to a cart like this is some spray paint. It brightened up the corner of my otherwise neutral-colored dining room.

I love how this rug provides a foundation of color for the neutral couch and chairs in this living room. The pillows and throws reflect the colors in the rug.
Want to go a little bigger? In my guest room, I painted one wall “Brilliant Blue.”
An accent wall is a great way to add color to a room without covering the whole room in it.
But if you wanted to fill a room with color, go for it! Check out my breakfast room, filled with shades of red:
The neutral background on the wall provides a balance to the bold red in the tree, chairs, and rug.
Red not your style? I like this living room in bright blues and greens.

The key to adding color in your home is to balance the color with neutrals. That way, the color doesn’t become overwhelming.
Now let’s take it outside!
Outside
Adding color to your yard doesn’t require major landscaping. You can add color to one bed or area with plantings and pots. This home added color to a small garden bed:

I love how the bright blues and purples in the pot and plants contrast with the light yellow paint on the exterior of the home.
Cottage gardens always deliver beautiful bright colors.

And the best part is that you can cut flowers from these gardens and bring them in to add color inside, too.
I’m ready to get out and garden!
