Classic Christmas Center Pieces and How to Get the Look

Alyssa Hawkins

Christmas is just around the corner and if you’re playing host or hostess for a holiday gathering this year, you may be asking yourself how you want to decorate the dining room table. Each year, I see a variety of center pieces that range from extravagant to romantic to simple but chic.

While your personal style and crafting abilities are important factors, the sky really is the limit to what you can do. It is important to keep in mind that although center pieces make the table beautiful and festive, you’ll need to be sure you have plenty of room to eat your meal comfortably.

Here are just a few classic ideas to inspire you before your table makes its grand debut:

Use pine cones, dried tree branches, and clear ornaments with sprigs of greenery inside to fill a tall glass vase for a look that is natural and lovely. Add additional greenery and dried berries around the base of the vase for more dramatic appeal.

I’m personally a big fan of dinner by candlelight. Something about the soft glow really emanates the magic surrounding the day, while making any size gathering feel more intimate and warm. Fill different sized hurricane jars with red-berried branches and water. Top with white floating candles and dazzle your guests!

Of course, you can never go wrong with floral arrangements. This one is elegant enough to be used at a winter wedding and stunning enough to make a statement at any table setting! (I also love the painted mason jar.) A simple arrangement of red and white roses could also be used.

Similarly to the pine cone center piece, you can pick up branches from your yard for this neat look! Spray paint branches white or using metallic colors like gold or silver for extra shine. Once dry, place them in a vase and hang colorful baubles from the branches. For a more personalized touch, cut out photos from Christmas-past to hang and enjoy reliving the memories.

Want to make a lasting impression on little ones at the kids’ table? Use chocolate candy to make edible “Kiss-mas” tree center pieces! Simply purchase cone-shaped foam from a local craft store to serve as the base of the tree. Gently press toothpicks into the bottom of the holiday Hershey Kisses and then into the foam cone. Top it off with a festive star or cupcake topper, but don’t expect these delightful pieces to last long!
