Getting your outdoor space ready for spring is similar to the natural unfurling of the season. You ready your outdoor space in stages adding furniture and accessories gradually as the season progresses. You can also signal the start of spring in your outdoor space by altering your color palette and patterns in your space to fit the season.

Spring weather can be fickle so although it’s tempting to set-up your outdoor space in full opening it up slowly is the way to go. Bring out a few pieces each week or month until confidence levels are high that the nice weather is here to stay. Start by bringing out a couple of outdoor chairs or chaise lounges to enjoy the occasional warm and sunny days. Then bring out the grill and the outdoor dining table set when the number of warm and sunny days increases. As spring progresses and the evenings are more comfortable for prolonged lounging bring out the fire pit to take the edge off of the evening chill. Before you know it the gorgeous summer weather is here and your outdoor space is decked out.

Spring has a very well defined color palette that we all recognize instantly. One way to signal the season in your outdoor space is by adjusting your summer outdoor color palette to a spring palette. By doing this your color palette will deepen in color as the seasons progress just like the flowers of your garden will. This works well if you have a neutral back ground for your outdoor furnishings. It’s easy to adjust your color palette by adding color through new accessories, rugs and pillows. In this example from Rios Clementi Hale Studios the coral pillows of summer could be traded out in the spring for shades of pink in the same coral family. Another way to signal spring in your outdoor space is to add visual cues. The season has some well established imagery and graphics associated with it; baby animals, flowers such as tulips and fruit tree blossoms, stripes and polka dots. Introduce some of these visual cues through the use of accessories to add spring to your outdoor space. In these two examples from Celerie Kemble and Robert Mills Architects, the addition of pillows in spring shades with a flower graphic and the addition of a bouquet of tulips to an outdoor dining room signal spring.
