How to: Fairytale Baby Girl Nursery

Jennifer Palmer

The possibilities when designing a baby girl’s nursery are endless. I knew I wanted the color pink to be present…but not TOO Pink. We also had a strict rule for a “no princess” theme.

I have a deep love for books. I wanted to instill that love in our new little bundle. Coupling this love and something a little girly we decided on “Once Upon a Time.” My husband and I have a fairy tale story as to how we met (me from California; him from Georgia; and we had a chance meeting that was Love at first sight!)

1. TIP: Hire a local artist to paint on the walls.

It’s better than any generic wall art and the whimsy feel really completes the room. The cost was very minimal and the artist was done in a couple of hours. Don’t forget to test out your paint before you commit. I tested and settled on Sherwin Williams Possibly Pink and Bella Pink. I added a chair rail to the room and measured out 5″ for the stripes. I knew I wanted a pinkish nursery but I couldn’t deal with all the walls being pink.

2.Tip: A sentimental piece of artwork is a great focal point.

Nursery Art with Ultrasound Picture & Convertible Changer

We put an ultrasound picture in this frame. It reads”

“Before you were conceived I wanted you

Before you were born I loved you

Before you were here an hour

I would give my life for you

This is the miracle of life.”

~ Maureen Hawkins

3.TIP: Design a nursery that grows. you don’t want to be redesigning the nursery in a year or so as your child grows into toddlerhood.

Buy a crib that’s convertible, and be sure to buy the bed rails when you buy the crib…in case the furniture set is discontinued. You’ll be happy you thought ahead! Our changer converts to a small bookshelf. Changers often get outgrown quickly, but this one will be put to use for years! This furniture is from JCPenney. Its by Savanna (how fitting) and it’s the Morgan collection.

4. TIP: Get a Glider that is neutral.

Glider from Best Chairs

This glider from Best Chairs can be used anywhere in our house once we wont need it in the nursery anymore. Its so comfortable and easy to clean. I have spent many nights in this glider with my daughter just rocking and cuddling!

5.TIP: Shop around.

Stores like Target and Walmart have great finds for great prices. I wanted to play up the Polka Dot walls by adding some round mirrors above the dresser. I found them at Target for a steal. I bought some craft ribbon to hang them to add more textural interest.

And of course….the little bundle. The amazing baby girl who is now part of the fairytale…Once Upon a time…

And the baby girl who completed the fairytale
