The Year’s “IT” Color: Emerald

Contributing Blogger

As we begin a new year, I thought we’d chat about fresh color. Did you know that various companies make color predictions every year? And that each company predicts the “IT” color?

A few of this year’s “IT” color predictions are:

  • Emerald Green from Pantone
  • Lemon Sorbet from Benjamin Moore
  • Aloe from Sherwin-Williams
  • Re-Blued from CMG

It’s interesting to see the colors side-by-side, but what does it mean for you? For the sake of showing you how to use a color trend in your home, we’ll focus on Pantone’s 2013 choice, Emerald Green.

Not many can afford to change the look of their home based on what a select group says is the “IT” color. But there are ways to integrate fresh color into your decor. Let’s start at the top with some fabulous saturated rooms…..

Beautiful green spaces, right?! But to make this task reasonable, we’ll focus on smaller ways to add color. Let’s say you l-o-v-e the color of the year and want it front and center in your home. Think upholstery. And not all of it. Just focus on a room or two and pick your pieces carefully. Maybe you just do a couple of side chairs or just a sofa. Stick to smaller patterns or solids that can be reworked with other colors should you ever tire of Emerald.

You might try experimenting with unusual tile in your kitchen or bath or giving your fireplace a vintage look with ornate tile. Maybe your powder room vanity could use a colorful update….

Want to scale this trend back with a less permanent change?  Then try wall color!  A can of paint is the least expensive way to transform a room and one of the easiest things to change over and over again.

Still not convinced you can do this? Then go smaller still with a quirky chandelier, throw rug, decorative pillows or draperies, large bold art or simple accessories. Any of these changes will bring the drama of Emerald Green without the cost or commitment of major change.

You can also incorporate small color bursts in your table settings or with easy cabinet hardware changes.

Lastly, fresh green color can be amazing on the exterior of your home….think green instead of traditional black for the front door. Or add a pop of green with oversized planters.

I find that even the smallest color change in the home can brighten the spirit and freshen the space. Hope this exploration of Emerald Green helps you add some of 2013’s “IT” colors into your home. Happy New Year, everyone!
