It seems I’m always on the hunt for more usable space in my home. I know I have plenty of square footage, but lack useful space for our lifestyle. Turns out our basement space is a great option for capturing existing square footage for specific functions. And while a full remodel/finishing job is not an option, I have landed on some specific steps to transform it into usable space.
Step 1: Assess the function or functions you need and make a plan.
Do you need office space, craft space, or play space for the kids? Are you lacking an extra bedroom or simply storage? Make a list of everything you need that basement space to do so you can begin to plan your space.
Step 2: Clean it up and dry it up.
If you need the space, purge whatever is down there you don’t absolutely need. Arrange for a charity pick up or small dumpster if necessary. And then start drying out the environment. My basement is already partly finished, but I was shocked when I plugged in a new dehumidifier! There was more moisture down there than I was aware of, so this unit was a great investment for us.
Step 3: Lighten it up.
It really doesn’t matter how you intend to use your basement, it will undoubtedly need more light. Paint your walls or even your exposed ceiling in light colors or white. This simple step magnifies any natural light you may have. Add lighting of some sort where your activities will dictate and don’t forget the stairs.
Step 4: Embrace what is not finished.
Paint your exposed concrete walls or flooring and your exposed ceiling. The expense of adding dry wall, flooring or ceiling tiles is not necessary as long as your surfaces are clean and spruced up.
Step 5: Implement your space plan using zones.
Forget about erecting walls! Use fabric, curtains, rugs, and furniture to divide your space. Disguise unsightly utility areas with curtains, designate play areas and TV watching zones with rugs, or separate a bedroom area off with tall bookcases.
Step 6: Add the fun stuff.
Now that you have the foundation in place, give your reclaimed space your own personal twist. Add fun wall decor, organization pieces, comfy furniture to add life to the space and make it more inviting.
