When starting to decorate a space, it’s easy to focus on its big components: the walls, the furniture, the flooring. But the special touches throughout a room are what give a room its character. Today’s post is all about those little things. Think of it as décor from the ground up: rugs, hardware, paint, accessories, & other special touches that add your own style to any room.
Rugs
Maybe it’s because it’s cold outside, or maybe I just like something warm underfoot, but I love a thick, fluffy rug to warm up a room!
When choosing a rug, don’t just default to beige or neutrals. Bright colors can spice up a space!
Just pick a color that will go with your decor and furniture (and, in my case, dogs), and one that you are willing to live with for a while!
Hardware
Hardware on cabinets or furniture is like jewelry in a room.
Think of it as accessorizing your furniture or cabinets!
What’s great about new hardware is that it’s generally not expensive and can give a room a whole new look and style.
Paint
Even if you don’t want to paint an entire room, painting an accent wall or a mural on a wall can freshen up or change a space.
I painted both of those walls, above, and each took me about an afternoon to paint. Not bad for a whole new look!
Accessories
You don’t need a lot of tchotchkes or clutter to accessorize a room. Pick a few pieces that you love, along with some books, photographs, and art.
You can even brighten up white or wood bookcases by adding fabric or paper to the back panel.
When starting to decorate a space, don’t think you have to do it all at once. Take your time and find pieces that reflect your style….from the ground up!
