Decorating with Khakis

Karen Cooper

When I say “khakis,” you probably think of pants or a certain “Jake” from a certain insurance company. But khakis are used in all styles of home decor. For this Color Showcase, I’ll show you how to use khakis in different ways in your home decor.

In a Neutral Palette

Khaki is a great base for a neutral decorating palette.

The khaki accents on the chairs, baskets, and fireplace provide warmth to all the cool white in the room, and softness to the black and white pieces. Baskets and wicker are a great way not only to add khaki colors to a room, but also some texture.

As a Partner for Color

Because khaki is a neutral, it works well with bright colors.

The khaki in the couch and in the wood floor anchors the room. Those big neutral pieces provide the perfect stage for adding colors, like the area rug and pillows.

As an Accent Color

You don’t really think of khaki as an accent color, but, in a bold, colorful space like the one below, it works that way.

The khaki colors in this room balance the boldness of the walls and rug. It gives the eye a break from the brightness and mellows out colors that could otherwise take over the room.

To Complement Vintage Touches

Khaki is a great backdrop for vintage touches in a room.

The tin ceiling and dark floors in this kitchen could make the room seem dark, but the khaki in the island and on the walls soften and lighten the room.

Because khaki is a neutral, natural color, it plays well with all kinds of design styles. Do you use khaki in your home? As a neutral base or an accent? Share in the comments!
