Toxin-free Scents for the Home

Alyssa Hawkins

I love for my home to smell good! Toxins are a growing concern for me. The more research and more information that becomes available the more aware of this problem. The owner for Calhoun’s Mother Nature’s Eden has proven to be a great insight for me. She really opened my eyes to a lot of toxin origins that I have never considered.  One of these was the plug ins and candles I love to have in my home to make it smells good. After she shared with me that these need to be removed to reduce the toxin in the home I knew there had to be a better way. Below are some options that are free from formaldehyde and carcinogens – both of which are very toxic for humans but still found in many of our air fresheners. Keep these toxins out of your home by trying some of these all natural alternatives.

1. Air Spritz

Simply combine a few drops of vanilla or almond pure extract with a cup of water in a spritz bottle. Spritz the mixture in the air with a spay bottle for an easy air freshener. Interested in more ideas like this? Check out 5 Easy Room Spritzer Recipes from The Prairie Homestead.

2. Stove Top

Some of my favorite stove top air freshening concoctions:

A. Need to get rid of a strong odor quickly? Simply simmer white vinegar on low in a small saucepan on the stove for 30-45 minutes. As it evaporates, it will help dissipate other smells as well.

B. Use left over citrus zest or entire peels from oranges or lemons to simmer on the stove with cinnamon or cloves. My favorite is using orange peels and whole cloves on the stove top at a simmer.

C. Mix one ounce of cinnamon sticks with one can whole cloves and one can all spice in a Ziploc bag. Take one teaspoon of the mixture and mix it with one cup of water on the stove. Let it simmer for a spicy potpourri.

3. Baking Soda

A. To tackle the smells of your garbage can sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the trash can before adding a trash bag.

B. Before you vacuum you can also sprinkle baking soda on the carpet. It gives the room a fresh and clean smell.
