Plant Your Own Herb Garden

Karen Cooper

I love spring. I have a vegetable and herb garden and tending it makes me happy, all spring and all summer long.

You don’t need a plot of land to have an herb garden – you can have one inside your home or in small spaces outside. Here are some ideas for how to have your own herb garden in any size space.

Indoors

With a little wall space, some chalkboard paint, and some gutters, you can hang an herb garden on the wall.

How about metal cans for pots? Recycle metal food cans for a cheap and easy planter for herbs. You can screw the cans to the wall or a board (like in the picture above), or attach the cans with pipe clamps.

You can even use recycled milk or juice cartons! Just cut a hole in the side of the carton and fill with planting mix and herbs. I love this recycling idea!

Outdoors

If you have a small space outside, try these ideas, like a pallet planter:

Pallets make great planters because they have ready-made “shelves” and they are usually free! Standing the pallet up vertically makes a perfect planter for a small outdoor space.

How about using wine (or any wood) crates for your herb garden? You can even plant several herbs in one crate – perfect for a patio or deck.

What about you? Are you planting herbs or veggies this year? How does your herb garden grow?
