Maximize Your Small Garden Space

Heidi Milton

Garden season is in full swing at last!  I always admire a large lush garden, but the reality is that time and space often don’t allow for that.   In fact, compact gardens can be just as enjoyable as sprawling beds of flowers, shrubs, and vegetables, while having the benefit of being easier to maintain.  All it takes is thinking a little outside the box.

Maximize small garden space

1.  Variety is your friend.  While it might be tempting to stick to a few reliable plants or flowers for your small space, seek out a few new things to add.   If you’re comfortable with hostas and ferns, add some bright flowers to the mix for added interest.  Combine different textures and pack your beds and containers with lots of plants.  You can always thin them later.

2.  Think up.  If you can’t spread out, spread up!  Vertical gardens are popping up everywhere from private back decks to trendy restaurants.  Use the exterior walls of your home to hang planters or a repurposed wooden pallet planter.  Raised planters can add a tiered effect, providing maximum planting space in a relatively small footprint.

3.  Create a “moment.”  Make your compact garden space feel like another space in your home.   Add decorative focal point or a small eating or lounging area.   Your plantings and decorative touches are reflections of you, so have fun with it!

4.  Group pots holding your vegetable and herb gardens in a sunny spot.  You don’t need the south side of your lawn to grow vegetables and herbs, just a few pots and a sunny corner of your deck or patio.  If you can, locate it close to your back door, for easy snipping and picking when you’re ready to cook!

5.  Don’t forget the window box.  One of the most underrated small gardening solutions is the good ‘ole window box!  Perfect for herbs or your favorite flowers, the view from inside will be just as pretty as the view from outside.
