DIY Herb Container Garden

Heidi Milton

I’ve been longing for a garden for quite some time now.  There’s nothing like eating fresh from the garden, especially in the summer time!  Alas, our yard isn’t conducive to creating a vegetable or herb garden.  But we do have a sunny back deck just off our kitchen, so I decided a container garden was within reach.

I recently spent some time on Pinterest looking for inspiration…

I love all the repurposed items in the above gardens, but the image that spoke to me the most was this one…

I love the look of clay pots — so classic.  And I just happened to have a few empty ones on hand. 🙂

The challenge was finding potted herbs at this late summertime date… I ended up finding a few at my local home improvement store and a few in the produce section of my grocery store.  So I scooped them up, along with some soil and fertilizer, and waited for the rain to stop long enough to put my new herb container garden together.

While I was waiting (and waiting), I decided to repurpose some paint sticks into herb markers for my new garden.

This was a simple job with spray primer to seal the wood and chalkboard paint.

I used a chalkboard marker to write the names of my herbs on the markers.

And once they were dry and the rain had stopped, I got busy putting my herbs into my clay pots.  I mixed some of the granular fertilizer with the potting soil, popped the herbs into the pots, and added my new DIY herb markers.

This project was so easily completed in just a couple of hours (minus time waiting for the rain to clear) and I am so thrilled to have this little garden available for my summer cooking.  The only herb I really wanted but couldn’t locate was dill.  So I’ll be keeping my eyes open for that in the weeks ahead, or I might start some from seed.  Who knows?

In fact, fresh herbs are required for two of my favorite summertime recipes, my Lemon-Cucumber Refresher and my Blueberry-Cucumber Slaw.  I invite you to check both of them out at Decor & More!  And you can find more of my DIY projects and inspiration for your home there, too.  You can also follow me on Pinterest and Facebook.

Happy herb growing!
