DIY Halloween Craft Projects

Karen Cooper

I have to admit: I’m not a fan of scary Halloween decorations. I much prefer decorations that are fun and not creepy! Here are some easy, fun DIY Halloween craft projects that won’t spook anyone!

1. DIY Candy Jars

I love this project because you can change the decorations on the candy jars for any holiday. To create these candy jars, I recycled two glass jars (these were pasta sauce jars) and glued them to metal candlesticks I found at a thrift store.

If the candlestick has a metal pin on it to hold a candle, remove it with pliers by gently wiggling it back and forth.

For the lids, I spray painted them high-gloss black, then added a Halloween decoration. The decoration is a plastic eyeball from the dollar store, glued to a magnet using my hot glue gun. You can find small magnets like this at craft stores.

Change out the magnetic decoration for each holiday! Glue a small ornament to a magnet for Christmas, plastic eggs for Easter, small flags for July 4th. You could even use small wooden block letters for your family members’ initials!

For Halloween, these jars look really festive filled with candy corn and mallow-creme pumpkins!

2. Decorated Craft Store Pumpkins

Craft stores are full of these faux pumpkins right now. Dress them up with ribbon, burlap, decals, or even duct tape!

The ribbon came from a craft store, and I attached it to the pumpkins using hot glue. The gold polka-dots are decals from Leen the Graphics Queen. And I loved the Halloween-themed duct tape!

This is a great project for kids because it’s so easy, and they can design each pumpkin how they want!

3. Painted Pumpkins

I painted some spooky scenes on some craft-store pumpkins! First, I spray painted the pumpkins white, which is what I chose as the color for my design. Then, I taped off the design using painters’ tape, and sprayed the pumpkin with black spray paint.

Carefully pull the tape off, and you’ve got a spooky scene on a pumpkin!

You could customize your pumpkins using any color paint or any design! I love the spider web – that was easy to create with painters’ tape and you can make it any shape or size.
