Inviting Thanksgiving Porches

Contributing Blogger

Many of you will soon be opening your fall homes for loads of entertaining.  If you’re like me, the pre-Thanksgiving festivities will start around Halloween and run straight through turkey day.  So before the weather turns too chilly, time to focus on your front porch.

The simplest and most obvious way to embellish your fall porch is by adding a colorful wreath.  Set your door apart from everyone else’s by getting creative.  Try a wreath made from ribbon.  Add your family crest or initial to the wreath.  For extra drama, use two wreaths instead of one.  Or go for broke and try colorful Indian corn like that used in the last photo….truly a unique wreath!

Speaking of unique, what else can you do to separate your front porch from the likes of all the others on your block?  Paint pumpkins, what else?!  Polka dots, stripes, heck….even argyle patterned pumpkins are sooo cute and will definitely show the neighborhood that you’re in a seriously crafty mood!  Food for thought…..if orange pumpkins don’t exactly “work” with your home’s exterior colors, then just paint your pumpkins to match.  Spray paint (tons of waaaay cool colors available) is the easiest way to color the whole pumpkin gold, red or even turquoise!

Just like your pumpkins may need a splash of color, your porch display may need a touch of the unexpected too.  Use unusual containers like an old antique wagon or wheelbarrow or an oversized garden orb.  If you’ve got the space to think outside the normal display norm, then by all means go for it!

Now don’t worry!  If you’d really like to use the same urns all year long, that’s ok too!  Just get a bit creative with what goes IN those urns.  Pumpkins stacked in trios and tied up with ribbon are super cute and easy.  You can vary the color of the stacked pumpkins or spray paint each pumpkin a different color to add variety.  ‘Course every urn longs for a fab floral arrangement……use a combo of florals, berries and pumpkins or stick to simple leaves and tall grasses to add height to your display.

Now that your head is spinning with ideas, I’ll leave you with a few last minute tips and some awesome front porch photo inspirations.  Happy fall wishes!

  • Clean the glass on and around your front door so your whole display sparkles!  Make sure to wipe down the door, trim and threshold too – things get extra dusty this time of year!
  • Check those outdoor lights….replace burnt out bulbs and clean the fixtures.  Once you create your fall porch masterpiece, you don’t want burnt out bulbs to ruin the look!
  • Freshen up with a new front door mat.  Can’t find the right color?  Check out my last post on D.I.Y. painted rugs and create your own special mat!
