Searching for the perfect art piece for your home? The quest can be intimidating — so many different styles and price points! How do you know what’s right for your space? I’ll let you in on a little secret: there are no rules — only what appeals to you.
That’s the thing about art — the beholder determines its beauty and worth.
But if you are completely paralyzed and not sure what would look good on your walls, it may help to evaluate the style of your home decor and choose artwork that is in keeping with that style. Let’s look at four different styles of decor…
1. Traditional. You probably know it when you see it — classic lines in the furnishings, symmetry in room layout, familiar patterns and fabrics. Art that works well in these spaces are paintings, framed botanicals and maps.
If an ornately framed painting doesn’t appeal to you, look for groupings of similar objects, such as these framed maps.
Or find similar objects that can framed alike and hung in a grouping, like these vintage botanical prints I framed and hung in my guest room.
2. Modern. If your home style is one of sleek clean lines with a contemporary sensibility, look for pieces of modern art to hang on your walls.
I’ve often thought it would fun to give modern art a try, so you could always DIY a canvas for your home, using your favorite modern piece as inspiration! Or shop the flash sale sites, such as Joss & Main (click HERE for an invite) , One Kings Lane (get your invite HERE), or Dot & Bo (join HERE) that regularly feature modern prints and canvases.
3. Cottage. There’s just something comfortable and welcoming about cottage decor… painted or worn furniture pieces, slipcovers — a sense of being lived in. The art you might in a cottage style space can be paintings, folk art, framed memorabilia, even every day objects.
Cottage style wall decor can be fun to shop for! Prowl around your local antiques store and look for magazine covers, old letters or postcards, or prints and signage that speak to you and give you that homespun feeling.
5. Eclectic. This has to be my favorite home style — it can be tricky to pull of that “anything goes” feeling without it looking too hodge-podge. But again, I would remind you that there are no rules, and art for an eclectic style home will be a collection of seemingly unrelated objects.
The eclectic wall decor may include plates, photos, paintings, taxidermy… or quirky pieces, like this favorite of mine.
These are just some suggestions for finding art you love for your home, based on your current or desired home style. But I’ve been known to throw caution to the wind. Take some risks, buy what you love, and your art will be just right for YOUR home, no matter what your home style is. Happy decorating!
